An Interview With Sofaya Art

Posted on June 05, 2017

A couple of months ago I was sent a message from two 9 year old girls wishing to share with me their art project. Inspired by their mum (who is an artist herself) Sofie and Maya were selling their beautiful drawings and paintings to raise money for a charity close to their hearts. I just love the creativity and initiative exhibited in this project. I caught up with the girls to find out more about their project.

Could you share with us a bit about yourselves and your project?

Our names are Sofie and Maya and we combined our names to create “SofayaArt”.  We are 9 year old identical twin girls who love both art and nature, so we decided to sell our artwork to help wildlife.  We are working on a project to help the Pine Marten, whose habitat is being destroyed by humans.  We began by painting modern minimal botanical art and have recently added pet portraits.

As I understand you are selling your artworks in order to raise money for charity. Can you tell us a bit about this charity?

The charity is that we are working with is called “Earth Rangers”. Earth Rangers is a group with over 10 000 children who learn about biodiversity and how to protect the environment and animal habitats.  We are working on the “Bring Back the Wild” campaign for the Pine Marten.  The Pine Marten is losing their habitat by increasing human destruction.  We chose the top goal of raising $500 and we have raised $390 so far! (Since this interview was conducted I am pleased to say that  Sofie and Maya have raised their goal amount.)

Where did the idea for selling your art to make money for charity come from?

The idea for selling art to raise money came from our Mommy, Melissa, who sells beautiful art (@melissamaryjenkinsart).  We love nature and wildlife and we have been eager to raise money for Earth Rangers, so we combined our love of art and created SofayaArt.

Have you always had a love of creating art?

Yes, we have loved creating art since we can remember.  We started painting with our fingers, then we painted in the books where you add water and colour appears, and then we started drawing unicorns and animals.  Now, we love to draw and paint wildlife, landscapes, our puppy Mylo and plants.

What are your favourite materials to use?

Our favourite materials are watercolor and acrylic paints and watercolor ink pens.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

We draw our inspiration from our favourite local floral store called @snowberrybotanicals and from nature.  We live in an old stone farmhouse surrounded by farm fields and a pond that is full of wildlife.  We also spend our summers up north on a lake, where we swim and play outside all day!  We have a studio in the farm house, and we paint outside beside the lake in the summer.

Are there particular colours you are drawn to?

Yes, we love green, blue, black and white.  We love these colours because we are inspired by the colours of nature and our black and white puppy named Mylo.

Where can we see more of your work? How can we buy your work?

You can see and purchase our paintings on our Instagram feed: , our Etsy shop and our Facebook Page.

Or you can donate directly to our “Bring Back the Wild” Campaign by going to the Earth Rangers website and clicking on DONATE, where you will be directed to donating to our campaign.
